Five (5) Powerful Ways to Write an Outstanding Title Tag For Blogger and WordPress
First of all, what comes to your mind when you hear about this word “TITLE” in a blog? A title is one of the most important elements on a website, and having an eye-catching blog is also one way of driving traffic to your site.
Every web page is expected to have a title element in its HTML code, and each post should have one as well. Blog HTML and posts/pages describe what the web page is actually about.
In this tutorial, I will briefly explain some major points to consider when writing a title for your blog posts. I have come to realize that many web pages don’t have good titles on their posts, and when you check the few that do, you will see that the title tag may not even be well written.
Having a good title on your website is also one of the key basics for powerful on-page SEO. SEO here simply means Search Engine Optimization. It is the overall overseer that determines whether a website is worth visiting or not to search engine crawlers and Search Engine Results Pages (SERP).
How does SEO work? It analyzes your site based on content quality, content structure, and often checks to see how well you utilize internal and external links on each of your pages.
What is TITLE Tag and How Does It Work?
The title tag for HTML is always written between the head tag of a page in the HTML Editor. But for those using the Blogger Platform for their site hosting, you can do this by following the simple procedure below:
- Login to your Blogger cPanel/dashboard.
- Click on the left sidebar and tap on settings.
- After tapping on settings, scroll a bit up to see something like “Blog Title.” Enter any preferred tag that will accurately describe your blog and click save.
Note: You can also use the HTML editor for your site to edit the title tag.
WordPress users can likewise edit their title tag in the HTML editor as well. I am using Blogger as my blogging platform, and I have limited knowledge on how to access the HTML editor in WordPress.
A typical title tag looks like this:
<title>your blog name</title>
Replace "your blog name" with the name of your website.
To access the HTML editor on Blogger, follow the steps below:
- Login to your Blogger Dashboard.
- Click on the upper left sidebar.
- Click on Theme. You will see a dropdown tiny arrow key; click on it.
- Select Edit HTML and locate the blog title tag as explained above.
FIVE (5) THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN WRITING TITLE TAG FOR YOUR BLOG
Before you rush into writing a title tag for your website, I would like you to first read through these key items you need to consider:
KEEP YOUR TITLE TAG SHORT: A common mistake webmasters make is thinking that a long title for a site is a key factor that determines its visibility to search engine crawlers, not knowing it can negatively affect the performance of the website.
Always ensure your title tag is short and contains meaningful keywords, rather than stuffing it with irrelevant sentences.
Even though Google and other search engines can read long titles, they only display about 50-60 characters in the SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages), cutting off the rest.
Your blog title tag should not be too short either. Titles like “XYZ” or “ABC” are vague and descriptive, leading Google to see the content as irrelevant.
DO NOT USE THE SAME TITLE TAG AT MULTIPLE PLACES: Make sure not to include the same title tag on individual blog pages. Each blog page should have a different title tag to avoid being flagged by Google for duplicate content.
For good SEO practice, you must avoid copy-pasting main blog title tags to individual pages, as it can severely impact your SEO efforts.
PREFIX YOUR BLOG NAME IN THE TITLES: It is good to prefix your blog name in each page title, but ensure it does not appear before the main title. The title should not start with your blog name.
Avoid inserting your blog name in blog post titles, as it weakens the overall keyword strength. A web crawler might misinterpret a title with a blog name as a keyword not related to the primary content.
IN CONCLUSION: Always ensure your site has a title tag that includes relevant keywords.
